WHO WE ARE

RTO/ERO District 13 Hamilton-Wentworth, Haldimand represents members of the education community living in the area of the City of Hamilton, the former Wentworth County and Haldimand County.  We have a membership of close to 3700 and are one of 48 Districts that comprise The Retired Teachers of Ontario.

WHO MAY JOIN::  Policies, April 2018

Upon application the following individuals shall be entitled to participate in RTO/ERO’s programs:

a) an individual receiving a pension from a teachers’ pension plan in Canada;

b) a retired teacher from a First Nations School in Ontario, with teaching qualifications from an accredited Canadian University or College, or certification from the Ontario College of Teachers;

c) a retired private school teacher/administrator not receiving a pension;

d) a retired teacher who opted for a commuted value transfer or a deferred pension from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) following the rules in place at the time;

e) a retiree from an educational organization in Canada, including the early years, school boards, post-secondary and the public sector;

f) a spouse of a participant in RTO/ERO’s program including a surviving spouse and a non-educator seoarated or divorced spouse, or a dependent of the participant where there is no surviving spouse;

g) an individual actively employed in education who is not retired and will be eligible upon retirement to become a participant in RTO/ERO’s programs.

There is no longer a designation for Full and Associate Member.

A member is a member.

AREA SERVED:

Our Northern border is Lake Ontario and our southern border is Lake Erie.  Our members live in the cities and towns of Ancaster, Binbrook, Burlington, Caledonia, Cayuga, Dundas, Dunnville, Fisherville, Flamborough, Grimsby, Hamilton, Hagersville, Jarvis, Lynden, Mount Hope, Stoney Creek and Waterdown.  We also have members living out of province and out of Canada.

 

WHAT IS PROVIDED TO OUR MEMBERS:

We provide for the local needs of our members through an active tours program, two golf tournaments, a curling bonspiel and special events like workshops and a Wellness Fair. Our Spring and Fall Luncheons are well-attended and provide a place to keep in touch with former colleagues.

Our District Goodwill Committee looks after the concerns of our more senior members. Birthday cards are sent to those members 80 years and over.  Sympathy cards are sent to the family of deceased members.

During the year three newsletters are published and are mailed or emailed to members. You may choose which method you prefer.

Two Tours brochures are also included in the mail-out. This occurs in the Winter newsletter and in the Summer newsletter.  Tours are to theatre presentations, to a Blue Jays game or a day boat cruise.  Lunch and transportation by coach are always included.

All members are invited to join the District 13 Executive.  You are welcome to attend an Executive Meeting.  You are also most welcome to help out on a committee or at an event.
